Whitmore House
Head of House: Ms Jones
Pastoral Welfare Officer: Mr Forsyth
Welcome to Whitmore House. The house is named after one of the former governors of the school, Mrs Dorothy Whitmore. She was previously the Chair of Governors at Uttoxeter Girls’ High School when it merged with Alleyne’s Grammar School (for boys) in 1964. The Whitmore name comes from Dorothy’s husband who was Frederick Whitmore. Frederick was born in London, the son of the headmaster of Licenced Victuallers School in Kennington. After qualifying at Oxford, he joined Denstone College as an English teacher in around 1908.
The colour gold is often associated with winners and it is this approach which is fostered within the house team. Students are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities and to work to high standards in order to develop as individuals. Whitmore have been very successful in the House Trophy standings in recent years, winning in 2018-19 and finishing runners up the previous year. Students represent the House with a great team spirit and competitive nature in a range of activities including sports, music drama and chess. All Whitmore students are encouraged to wear the ‘gold’ tie with pride and strive for excellence in every walk of school life.
Students in Whitmore are supported by a team of 7 tutors and Mr Forsyth, Pastoral Welfare Officer and the Head of House. The Whitmore tutor team are a very experienced group of teachers, who have worked together for a long time and form strong working relationships with their tutor groups. At all stages of their education Whitmore students are encouraged to go above and beyond expectation, whether it is for the House, School or local community. This philosophy is evident when pupils are competing in school, for school, within the local community or supporting the community.
If as a parent or young person you would like to know more about Whitmore or the pastoral system within school, please contact myself or Mr Forsyth.
